Our Story
A watering hole with
a long memory
Thirty-plus years on North Santa Cruz Avenue, brewing downstairs and cooking upstairs.
How it started
The Los Gatos Brewing Company was established in 1991 to quench the growing thirst for native Los Gatos brews. As news of our diner's pub spread, beer drinkers from far and wide came to sample our lagers and feast from our gourmet menu. Serving only the freshest and finest in California cuisine, The Los Gatos Brewing Company soon became the fashionable watering hole and premier eatery it is today.
It started the way most good brewpubs start: a room downtown, a kitchen that took itself seriously, and a brewer who wanted to make lager in a country that had mostly stopped bothering. The kettles went into the cellar. The bar went in upstairs, long and mahogany, and it filled.
What kept people coming back was the pairing. A Munich helles next to a double-cut pork chop is a better argument than either one alone, and for three decades that argument has been made nightly at the same address.
The Building
Brewery downstairs, dining room up
Everything on tap is made in the cellar underneath the floor you are standing on. Nothing travels further than a flight of stairs.
Copper kettles, a handful of tanks, and a brewer who would rather make one lager properly than six things quickly.
Long, dark, and loud on a Friday. Six house taps, the full menu, and no reservation needed.
Where the kitchen does its real work. Quieter, and the right room for a long dinner.
What We Care About
Fresh, local, and unhurried
The beer is brewed to style and given the time the style asks for. Lagers are not rushed. The porter is not served ice cold. The IPA is bitter, because that is what a West Coast IPA is.
The kitchen buys from the valley when the valley has it, changes the specials weekly, and leaves the signature dishes alone. Some things do not need improving.
